Preacher (1995-2000) by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon Review

“Preacher,” the legendary comic book series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, follows Jesse Custer, a small-town pastor possessed by Genesis, through a twisted, violent, and darkly hilarious universe. This rollercoaster journey, published from 1995 to 2000, has shaped graphic storytelling.

Genesis, the child of a forbidden angel-demon union, escapes its celestial prison and connects with Jesse Custer, giving him the power to command anybody with the word of God. Jesse’s epic quest to confront God, who has left his divine seat in Heaven, begins with this occurrence. Jesse travels America with his sharp-witted ex-girlfriend Tulip O’Hare and a hard-drinking Irish vampire named Cassidy, encountering weird personalities, supernatural forces, and deep-seated conspiracies.

“Preacher” blends genres, making it hard to classify. The lonely pastor is the classic gunslinger seeking salvation and answers in this dark and irreverent Western. It soon exceeds this classification, plunging into supernatural horror, criminality, and satire. The series’ monstrous villains and supernatural powers add dread, and it shows severe brutality and gore.

Despite the brutality and sadness, “Preacher” contains dark, biting comedy to provide readers with moments of relief. The series relies on humor to lighten its sad story. For horror, western, and dark comedy aficionados, Garth Ennis’s genre-blending produces a novel and exciting story.

Primary Characters

Jesse Custer: The preacher’s past, religion, and divine powers make him complex. His unshakable fairness and resolve drive the story. Jesse’s story examines atonement, faith, and the morality of total power.

Tulip O’Hare: Jesse’s bold ex-girlfriend Tulip is a major character. She’s a brilliant marksman and tough combatant, defined by her dedication to Jesse and her difficult history. As she faces her difficulties with Jesse, Tulip finds herself and heals.

Cassidy: The trio’s quirky Irish vampire Cassidy provides character. His connection with Jesse and Tulip is a highlight of the series, and he is funny and tragic. Cassidy’s addiction, terrible past, and lasting relationship enrich the story.

Herr Starr: The series’ major enemy, Herr Starr is a cold, calculating, and power-hungry Grail officer. He is a powerful antagonist due to his fixation with Genesis and desire to rule the world.

Writing Style

Garth Ennis’s “Preacher” prose is outstanding. He tackles complicated subjects with sardonic wit in a thought-provoking story. Sharp, darkly humorous dialogue by Ennis gives characters depth and realism. The novel has the right mix of action, character development, and plot twists to keep readers hooked.

Ennis tackles tough topics. “Preacher” explores religion, morality, violence, and God without apology. It challenges conventional wisdom and raises uncomfortable faith and humanity questions. Ennis’s willingness to experiment with the tale makes “Preacher” a breakthrough graphic novel.

Steve Dillon’s art matches Ennis’s text. Dillon’s rough, realistic approach captures character face expressions and body language well. He shows the story’s violence and gore in his powerful, visceral action sequences. Ennis’s narrative and Dillon’s art make a gorgeous and moving encounter.

“Preacher” is not for the fainthearted. This dark, violent, and irreverent story pushes graphic storytelling. If you like unique stories that examine the darker side of life and religion with humor and wit, “Preacher” is for you.

This comic book series shaped subsequent works and adaptations. It’s no wonder that “Preacher” became a successful TV series, introducing the story to more people. The original comic series is still a masterpiece and should be on every serious comic book fan’s shelves.
